For a run that didn't feel very hard, I was probably rested enough to warrant the time I did run. My relative effort was pretty good but not particularly hard. One of the tendons around my right hip is pretty scarred up, which suggests I've been grinding through it and that may also explain some of my hip and back pain. Yay, me.

First run in 8 days. I took it very easy to see how I felt and apart from elevated heart rate than usual -- which is to be expected after so much time out of the saddle, I could feel a little bit of the same sort of sensation when I'm jumping down from a surface and the shock goes through my back and head. It is entirely possible that it may just be my baseline level of pain for once since I've gone through a major reset of medications and come off Celebrex for the first time in a few years. This was also coming off a week of work where I worked essentially two 17-hour days, which is far out of the norm even from when I was deployed.

Much work to do to get back in the saddle in earnest.

Easy recovery run, being careful not to reach into zone 4. That happened, but the weather was also really good and that's fine, since my legs were pretty tired after yesterday's hard run. Today was partly recovery and partly burning lard.

First run after coming off beta blockers and I felt pretty goddamn awesome. Fast and the weather was absolutely perfect. I was holding a sizeably harder pace than usual but the weather more than helped. Just a great run today.

One big difference was, of course, that I haven't done anything since Sunday. I did lift on Tuesday, and that was pretty good as I felt good in spite of being careful. It was also the first time I had done standard (not hex-bar) deadlifts and I will probably work those a little more intensively because of their general benefit.

First hard run (relatively speaking) since going on beta blockers. I've been noticing my legs are generally tired, and I'm going to chalk that up to not getting enough oxygen during the run, but they should be recovering. Unless their relative effort is really disproportionate. I think the difference in relative heart rate is a reduction of about 20bpm.

The weird heart rate readings from my last run weren't a bad HRM. It was my first ever attack of atrial fibrillation and I dodged a fucking bullet. As a result, I took the last few days off and now I'm on a beta blocker to make sure I don't have another episode. Needless to say, my heart rate is distinctly depressed as a result and I also don't have the same speed either. This is fine, it's better than a myocardial infarction.

After changing out for a HRM strap with a known newer battery, it seemed to stabilize some, but there were still some anomalies through the first 10 minutes until I was sweaty enough to make proper contact with the strap. I went hard, zone 5 hard, in the second half. I may regret this tomorrow, which means I need to do a legitimate recovery run, easy tomorrow instead.

There was something seriously not right with the HRM today, or my heart, or both. I was feeling like I had to work much, much harder than I thought, and my HRM started racing with numbers well in excess of 200bpm, which either means crazy levels of tachycardia or the battery is starting to go out. I decided to return to change out HRM straps and try again. The other possibility is that I might have been having a heart attack, in which case, I was probably a dead man already.

Maybe not a recovery run, since I drove to Williamsburg and back to day to get Kid 2, as well as a physical therapy session that was actually a bit of work. I didn't expect to run at anaerobic threshold, but I was tired. But I needed to get a run in so I would feel better later, I think I do.

This was an unbelievably hard run that I might not have prudently done, but I felt good...and I wanted to see how hard I could go. Turns out I was able to keep speed for a sizeable chunk of this run and while the weather was just about perfect without it being too cold and risking pulling something.

I am going to have to be really careful about recovery work tomorrow after this hard run. This is the first time I think I've had my watch say I was running into zone 5.

The iThink was surprising; the cadence I was running lent itself well to the very last iThink. Even Touché Amoré's "Palm Dreams" wasn't hard enough for the cadence I was pulling.

Today was supposed to be an easy run and was, for the most part. I didn't work very hard, although that's not reflective of the heart rate reading. I'm not too worried about that, but wanted to make sure I wasn't burning up the legs too much, which I didn't think I was.

Or it's possible that I threw away a recovery day, but at the slow speeds I run, every day is effectively recovery if it's shorter than 6.

I think I've pulled a hamstring, based on the burning sensation in my right hamstring area and the swelling I'm feeling. Shit. I tried rowing, but that was going to be inadvisable after the first 1000m. On a day that is tailor made for running. Fuck.

Easy run, which I almost bagged off, but I was tired, and my legs are still tired. But I needed to offset the caloric intake of last night, which pretty much annihilated last night's run. I also ate a very late, very large lunch. This is a little undisciplined.

Recovery run after yesterday. I was struck with the most colossal cravings I've ever had on a run in a long while - I wanted toast with butter with honey. I had that after the run, albeit with strawberry preserves instead of honey. And some greek yogurt. And two cheese curds. And two tater tots. OMFG I had the munchies so bad today. But I got in my run, which is good, since I pretty much annihilated its caloric effect by eating what I did.

On, what a difference a day makes! The first half was a little nondescript. The second half I decided to play a bit with turnover and unintentionally turned it into a tempo to max VO2 run by the end. I don't mind, since it's been a while since I really cranked out a good hard run, and the second half of today definitely qualifies. The second iThink is about the beats per minute required to properly pace- about 160 bpm.

I reset the training zones on my HRM because it's been a while since I've adjusted them and they are probably no longer even remotely accurate. Aging will do that. Easy run today as it's supposed to get cool this weekend and I'm going to stack three days of LSD. This is the first. This was also punctuated with a brief pit stop in the mid-run, so the route was very nonstandard.

I've been listening to a lot of Chvrches lately, although I wanted to switch it up with other female vocalists, so I dusted off some oldies but goodies. Don't judge me.

A cooler day today, and a later start. Everyone at home is depressed. The children are are both at college, and everyone is depressed, to include the dogs. Our older dog is really out of sorts because both girls are gone and I'm not much of a substitute. My knees are starting to flare up, and I hit them with the foam roller but it's time to put a cho-pat strap back on, I fear.

A rare mid-day run, but it was raining this morning and it's the coolest it's been pretty much all summer long. So I'll take it. My legs were dead, though, and they did not settle in until about 50 minutes into the run. It took a while.

Also, the younger is going to college tomorrow, and it's going to be a hard day.

Late start, so short run. I didn't feel up to running hard, and it is humid outside and kind of nasty. So I did my first slug run in a long while.

There are many reasons for the Postmodern Jukebox cover of today's iThink, but the video of Ada Pasternak and PMJ is a pretty good reason.

Today's iThink is because of jwer, who ranted about "NO JOURNEY" on the first run I logged on this blog. 16 years ago or so. No shit.

Abnormally faster start and first half, but slower second half, not the least of which because I had gone out a bit fast. Also, yesterday marked some lifting, which might've had some effect on how I felt today:

Today was another day of lifting, followed by a run later that night. The premise was that I might get more weight loss if I ran and lifted. It would probably work better back to back, but it was not to be.

Hex bar deadlift 10/8/6 @180
Standing barbell press 10/8 @65
Dumbbell bench press 7/6/4 iso hold @35
Dumbbell row 10/8/6 @35
Landmine squat 15/12/10 @20
Landmine single arm press 10/8/6 @10
Gravitron pullups 12/12/9 @75
ACFT leg tuck 1 @BW with poor form

I'm hoping the weight work will help a bit with back pain but I need to be attentive to quad and hip flexors. The run was indistinguished but at least there was driving rain for the first quarter of the run. The run length took a little adjustment, but it was perfect.

First row in a long while, but I wasn't about to run with the temperature what it is right now, and anyway, I was sore after lifting yesterday, so some erging was probably in order.  Today was slow, as I was working pretty hard (or so it felt) to hold 2:20/500m.  That is kind of disappointing, but not surprising.

I have lost quite a bit of strength, so I look forward to doing weight work again, and that might actually catalyze some weight loss too.  The goal remains to try to make tape cutoff weight, which might actually be possible if I'm disciplined and continue to work at it.  I realize dietary discipline is probably the hardest part of it.

Today marked my first time in the gym since 22 March. When I take four months off lifting, certain things come back...weaker.

Hex bar deadlift 10/6/6 @200
Dumbbell bench press 7/6/5 iso hold @30
Dumbbell row 10/8/6 @30
Standing barbell press 10/6 @65
Leg press machine 15/12/10 @220

I'm sure the dumbbells could've gone up further than 30, but I was being conservative. Everything else I thought I was being conservative, but I was having some real trouble with the reps after the first set. I have definitely lost a lot, but that means there's room for improvement again.

Easy recovery run after yesterday's long grinder. The fact that it was noticeable cooler helped a lot. I was balancing heart rate with relative effort, but my legs are tired as I definitely felt at the beginning trying to go uphill. By the time I was warmed up I felt much better.

I started earlier than usual, and decided to get in my first legitimate long slow distance in a while. Even after chugging two liters of water, I was still sucking by the end. It is an indicator when the temperature has cooled to 86 and it makes a big difference. Glad I did it, but goddamn, this run was suck.

I was thinking about REM's early work this morning when I saw some story about how the Voice of America and Radio Free Europe were being gutted by the Trump administration.  That is bad.  But it reminded me of some very vintage REM, which was good.  Someday this kleptocracy will pass.

The "light rain" was a torrential downpour, which I welcomed, just after the halfway mark for about a mile. That was awesome. My legs started tired, which may be an indicator that I need to take tomorrow off. The finish was good but the rain had a big part in that.

Today started somewhat ugly, but a few hundred meters before the end of split 4, I felt much better.  Partly that is because I had a mild headache at the start of this run. I believe that's because I had 28oz of coffee and possibly 48 oz of Diet Pepsi today at work. That is a very bad sign.

Pleasantly, my average time seems to be improving at relative effort - my easier runs are faster. That is a good sign.
