Some thoughts on Ender's Game

Sitting at Fort Bliss for a second time getting ready to deploy, it seems almost ironic that I showed up with the intent of seeing a particular film before I departed.  Back in 2005, that film was Serenity.  This time, the film was Ender's Game.

I read the book a long time ago, and bought it when I was in college.  It's been one of my favorite books, regardless of Orson Scott Card's thoughts on same-sex relationships.  I always have to exercise some discretion on movie adaptations since I know you can't squeeze the entire book into the movie (for a particularly hideous example, I cite Stephen King's The Stand), but I thought this was generally okay.

Some things that stuck in my mind:

1. The parts where Ender Wiggin stops bullying could have been more graphically done.  I thought that was a pretty important part of the story.

2. I wasn't keen on the changes made in characters and some of their development from the book to the movie.  It felt artificial.

3. Not enough attention paid to Peter and Valentine Wiggin.  Time doesn't really permit, but also pretty important for exposition.

4. Hyrum Graff is much less likeable (and far less complex a character) in the film than in the book.  On the other hand, Mazer Rackham is played true to form.  I particularly liked the Maori ink.

5. There's a paragraph from the book Ender's Shadow that stuck in me as I was watching the space combat scenes:

That's why they were giving most of their commands orally.  They were being transmitted to real crews of real ships who followed their orders and fought real battles.  Any ship we lose, thought Bean, means that grown men and women have died.  Any carelessness on our part takes lives.  Yet they don't tell us that precisely because we can't afford to be burdened with that knowledge.  In wartime, commanders have always had to learn the concept of "acceptable losses."  But those who keep their humanity never really accept the idea of acceptability.  Bean understood that.  It gnaws at them.  So they protect us child-soldiers by keeping us convinced that it's only games and tests.  Therefore I can't let on to anyone that I do know.  Therefore I must accept the losses without a word, without a visible qualm.  I must try to block out of my mind the people who will die from our boldness, whose sacrifice is not a mere counter in a game, but of their lives.

6. Finally, this one, from the Ender's Game book itself:
"there's a war on, and our best talent is gone, and the biggest battles are ahead."

The last two particularly stick with me as I prepare to go back to Afghanistan; while I've been told that I will not get the closure I wanted from my last deployment, the film Ender's Game, for its limitations, was a useful moral azimuth check for me.

Buying it on disk when it comes out.  I, of course, will still be in Afghanistan when it comes out, so I might wait to get it until I come back to the USA on leave or at the end.

Today was not going to be fast, but I didn't expect it to be as slow as it felt. It turned into a "I wonder where I can go and how far do I feel like going" kind of run. That led me past Biggs Army Airfield, as well as beyond the railhead, which took me back to the days when I was a lieutenant in an armored cavalry squadron and I spent a fair amount of time on railheads.

What I did NOT expect at Fort Bliss this morning was driving snow. This wasn't the kind of fluffy snow that is pleasant, either. It was hard semi-frozen ice kind of snow that got in my eyes and didn't feel that great.

I was frankly stunned that of all the things to stick in the back of my head it was a song from the Police's album Synchronicity that I hadn't thought about in years, going on decades.

I can only imagine how dicey it's going to be for those lucky folks who are driving around El Paso today. It's a good thing I don't have to go anywhere or do anything...

Back at Fort Bliss for the first time in seven years, for the same reason - I am deploying to Afghanistan. I knew from the last time that Bliss is at altitude; this time it was just as winter was about to hit and it was chilly.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel running this morning, but apart from the usual slowness, I didn't feel like I was toast. On the other hand, I didn't feel like I had a whole lot of extra reserve instead either.  Fort Bliss sure is peaceful on a Saturday morning, though.

If I can get a solid set of running before going forward, it will probably help tremendously.

I have no explanation for the iThink other than the other song (Hilary Duff's "Wake Up") that often stuck in my head when I was here eight years ago as a deployer.  Same genre, mostly.  Same reminder of my children, mostly.

I'm in Raleigh for the Younger's swim meet. I knew I was going to have to do something since I was on the road, so I cranked out 10km, hard, on the dreadmill. I hate running on the dreadmill, but aside from the swimming families that are here for their kids, there's a bunch of youth soccer players in the same hotel with their parents, and some of them were in the gym in the hotel the same time I was. Being snarky, I decided to go hard, and since it was on a dreadmill, I think it peaked out at 180bpm because I just went faster and faster. The times bear out, although I backed it off in the last mile.

I followed that with 10/4/3 pullups.  Because.  Although I shouldn't be too thrilled with that precipitous drop in reps on the pullup bar.

Based on the schedule this weekend, I don't think I'll get another pass on the dreadmill, so I have to be reasonably happy with only getting a day in.  Tomorrow will be a day off.

Today was cold. At least, cold by Virginia standards, not Kansas standards. I raised the snivel-con a bit and had a rough first two miles, especially uphill. Once I was warmed up, the uphills didn't seem so bad, but before that, it was pretty suckarrific.

I debated briefly whether to sleep in or not, but I'll get at least a day or two of no running this weekend when we go down to Raleigh NC to see the Younger swim in a meet there. Thus, no rest days because I know I'll get it on the weekend.

The Tears for Fears song was a surprisingly usable running mantra.  It's a song I hadn't thought about in years, although I listened to it quite a bit when I was on my first combat tour in Iraq, back in 2005-2006.

My uphill running is starting to get a little rougher, although it might be because I haven't done much regular running and anything is an increase over the last month.

I woke up seeing calm winds thinking this was going to be a good run, then stepped out into ridiculously high winds. It was windy enough where I would've considered clear eye protection had I gone out and done it. At least I got it in before the weather really got bad.

First run in three days, if only because I've been trying to close out the changes in the strategy I've been authoring, while transitioning my duties to my successor. For me, that means I get my usual post-dinner coma at around 8-9pm or so, then I'm alert again by 11pm, and I've been writing up until 2am. Then I wake up 3 or 4 hours later for a new day of work. That is unbelievably unhealthy but I feel compelled to get my thoughts in order before I hand off the product.

I will run longer and more regularly when I get more sleep. That starts after today, which will be my last day in the office, and it sure feels strange. Today is also the OPFOR CDR's birthday. That has its own challenges too.

Somehow, my Garmin Forerunner 305 isn't holding a charge when not continuously charged. It is, of course, almost 5 years old, so I think it's given plenty of good use for the time I've had it. It was good for about an hour when it finally crapped out, so I had to figure out the last split from the expected time difference.

Today's run was solely to burn lard, and I think it worked well for that.  Also the first long run I've done in several weeks, but the weather was too good to pass up.

Crappy start followed by solid midway and hard finish. I wasn't sure how I was going to feel, so I started conservatively, but by the 4 mile mark I was fully warmed up and ready to go. Fairly strong finish although I was having some trouble with the uphills, but not too much.

Not sure why I had the colossal Michael Kamen attack this morning, although there were snippets of other things in the first half mile.

Easy run after the day of rest, but I am tired from not sleeping enough and drinking too much coffee. Oh well. At least I got in the run - and while it started slow and crappy, it was a pretty decent run by the 3-mile mark, and there are very clearly defined negative splits. However, I started too late to make it useful, so I only ran 3.5 today. More tomorrow, perhaps. I go back to running long to burn lard again.

For being all fucked up on injuries and not training hard, I still got my customary 200 points on the pushups and situps, and then ran a rather surprisingly better-than-expected 15:29 on the two-mile run. Lackluster run last time on some training base followed by nagging injuries (for which I compensated with a shitload of painkillers). I'm going to hurt all day, but I can resume pig out ops. Woot.

My usual workout plan gave me my quick kill on pushups, but situps took a bit longer - although not the closer call I had from last time.

The test itself continued in the usual high standard I saw from US Army Headquarters Company. Never a bad thing.

Easy wogging before tomorrow's PT test. My left ankle is still not back to normal. I'll fix that with some lidocaine and naprosyn before going in tomorrow and deal with the consequences later when I don't have to take another PT test for 6 months.

I am actually mildly concerned about tomorrow's run, although getting 73 pushups and 76 situps should be criminally easy. I just have to run 18:18 or faster. I am mildly embarassed.

There is no rational explanation for today's iThink.

Today, in spite of the light rain and overcast, was a pretty ugly run. I was tired after the last few days of the Boyd and Beyond conference (which I've attended since its revitalization in 2010) at Quantico and my general workload in the office. I had taken the last few days off because I was exhausted, but I had to run today.

I was remembering advice from my cross-country coach in high school, decades ago, that I needed to be running "just slightly uncomfortable." I was able to do that for a good chunk of today, but it was still tough going.

I didn't run yesterday because work has been really, really bad this week, but I needed to get at it. I almost chickened out when I heard the rain going this morning, but knew I had to run and was singularly glad that I got one in for some of the best running weather (at least for me) I've had.

Not everyone enjoys running in the rain, but I do, especially like this.

I realized I'm going to kill someone if I don't start running, especially with three weeks before a PT test. I'll let myself go after the test, but this is one time when I'm going to just take the fucking pain and just run.

Today made for an interest set in the iThink this morning.  It's interesting to see what sparks what when you're on the run.

I hadn't thought about "Cars and Helicopters" in a while, first time I heard it was 25 years ago on Hearts of Space on NPR when I was in high school.  Not sure where the Craig Safan bit came from, but as I was running, I was reminded of the opening credits to Hamburger Hill, and then I remembered about Bobby Troup on the show Emergency, which I watch on the TiVo as I'm punishing myself to pushups and situps in the evening.

I also realized that I'm starting to get bigger and that's just not acceptable. I realized this as I was rolling the trash can out to the kerb and the line "because you are a disgusting fatbody, Private Pyle" came to mind.

Time to see how bad I hurt later today. Might not be that many people at work since the government shut down today...

Riding around Burke Lake Park means I can't go very fast because of the number of people and dogs there. Once I got back out to Fairfax County Parkway it got a bit faster.

Easy recovery run, partly because I went to sleep very late and woke up late, but also have had some killer plantar fascitis the last few days and my right foot is frankly killing me. Running while it's dark, with streetlights, though, was what triggered the blast from the past. That, and binging out on watching the show in reruns on the DVR last weekend. I was maybe 4 years old when it was on, but at the time, it was my favorite show next to, perhaps, the Six Million Dollar Man. Unlike the latter, though, Emergency! has aged pretty well.

While the heart rate was a bit lower than I'd expect for a zone 4 run, today's weather warranted going full out. I felt like I was doing that within reasonable limits, but in spite of that, today's run was not the killer that it could've been. The weather was a big factor in today's run, though. It rarely gets much better than that (although running in pitch blackness is always exciting.

Still very much thinking about last Friday's Tommy Keene show, if the iThink selection today was any indicator.

Today wasn't as cool as I'd have liked, and I dressed a little warmer than I should've. I didn't go any faster than I normally would, but I felt like I was able to run harder than I usually run.

Yesterday was a day where I felt totally out of gas.  I was tired after seeing Tommy Keene on Friday night - my body says I'm 41, but in my heart, I was 21 again.

I ran a bit harder partly to keep formation with groups that were running - something I was able to do with some effort, but today's benefit was being able to run at anaerobic threshold for longer than usual.

Today was the first run in two days - I'd slept in the last two days because I was too tired and had only gotten about 4 hours of sleep. Last night was a deliberate effort to go to sleep before 11pm, and it was worth it. I really need to be more disciplined about doing that because I'll be able to get up and actually work out like I need to in the morning instead of being tempted to sleep in.

I felt better about going uphills by the 3rd or 4th mile, as usual, but today was particularly humid and unpleasant. 70 degrees is unpleasurable if the relative humidity is 100%.

Wasn't sure how I was going to feel this morning, and the start was a little rough, but by the time I'd hit around 3 miles, it was better, and I thought the run overall went well. Not awesome, but not bad, and no periods of forced walking because I was too beat.

The weather was pleasant enough, so the scenery factor was increased some. I guess that's the recompense for the tempest I'm going to ride most of today, I suspect.

Today's run started rough. I'd gone down to Quantico for my customary haircut (either weekly or biweekly) and figured I'd go for a run afterwards. The barber put hair gel (perhaps the only time I ever put it on) and I was trying to figure out why I was so heated up - which owes perhaps to the gel. I probably shouldn't be so picky about dumping heat, but I generate a LOT of heat while I run. I was wiping the gel out and felt better by the time it was out.

The run itself, after the first two miles, was actually pretty good. The route I took today was pretty hilly, but surprisingly enough, I felt pretty good even going uphill on the way back. I was more concerned about max heart rate as I'll probably do one of the few 11-milers tomorrow that I'm likely to do.

Woke up a little earlier in the hopes I'd get to get in a good run, but started later - and probably for good reason in any event.

I felt great this morning. I'm sure the weather was a contributing factor, although the forecast had briefly mentioned temperatures in the low 50s, which is prime running weather for me.

I decided to go a little further than my usual five, and almost got in one of my treasured 6.66 milers, although I guess I'd have to go just a little bit further to make that work.

Today's iThink was mostly the second (especially by the fifth mile where I was fully warmed up and started really going), but the third would nag in from time to time.

First hard run in a while - I have shifted to running more hills in an attempt to mentally toughen while getting stronger. The weather was pretty amazing for a September, so I was glad I got at it. Surprisingly fast even for the weather. Either that, or the 10-15 degrees makes a bigger difference than I thought.

The iThink was interspersed with Bear McCreary's "Anthem," who I realized is sung by Mark Donnelly, the same guy who sings the national anthems for the Vancouver Canucks. Caprica, after all, was filmed in Vancouver, although the scene I'm thinking of, of course, is the one where monotheists get waxed with headshots.

I wasn't up for a full long run, but I needed to go more than the usual 5, and I was curious as to what I was capable of today after going hard yesterday. Today turned into a gut check to see if I could still grind it out for distances shorter than 11, and it delivered, in spite of the relatively slow times, which I found disappointing. The weather probably was a contributing factor.

Strangely, I felt better by about the 7 mile mark. But I got my long run in for the week. Now to start working on pushups and situps.

I have only this video to account for today's iThink.  I admit to listening to emo from time to time.  So it goes.

I started far, far, far too late for my customary Sunday long run. I've been trying to tune up the home network but the firmware on the router provided by Verizon (I'm a FiOS customer) is awkward at best and painful at worst.

Today was the day I start shifting to more hard running rather than LSD. I have a PT test in about a month and a half and that's enough time for deliberate preparation.

Time to fight with the router again.

Today was a recovery run, no more. I wasn't in the mood and I didn't feel up to running hard at all, and while some might charge that this is junk mileage, I think any mileage is better than none at this point in my life.

Today's run was a very deliberate attempt at wogging to try to recover from yesterday's run. I guess I'll see if it worked tomorrow.

This morning's iThink was purely a result of the first thing that came to mind to force another earwig out, which was "Boyfriend" by Best Coast. I have no idea whatsoever why it stuck, but I needed something a little more pointed. So the Goo Goo Dolls it is - although I can think of far worse albums to riff than Superstar Car Wash.

Today was not any faster. It felt better, and I was thinking about why the worst part of the run is around the 8-mile mark, just after an hour. I think the reason is continuing to go faster at the second-wind mark that I hit around the 6-mile mark. By 8 miles, I'm gassed and in the hurt box, but by mile 10 I feel better.  The feeling better part is probably due to glycogen regenesis at that point in the run.

Also, more prosaically, when there's more people on the trail, I tend to run faster because of a desire to pass people. Maybe not right, but it certainly is correct.

These scores indicate that you are a tough-minded moderate progressive; this is the political profile one might associate with a liberated atheist. It appears that you are cynical towards religion, and have a suspicious and unsympathetic attitude towards humanity in general.

Your attitudes towards economics appear laissez-faire capitalist, and combined with your social attitudes this creates the picture of someone who would generally be described as libertarian.

To round out the picture you appear to be, political preference aside, an idealist with several strong opinions.

This concludes our analysis; we hope you found your results accurate, useful, and interesting.

Unlike many other political tests found on the Internet which base themselves on untested (and usually ideologically motivated) ideas, this inventory is adapted from Hans Eysenck's own political inventory which was developed after extensive empirical investigations in the 20th Century.

Dead legs today, so all wogging today. I didn't sit around on the computer for an hour as was my custom waiting to get ready for the run, and maybe that had something to do with it, but I need to get more efficient in the mornings and not spend as much time wasting time.

Of course, I was unable to figure out the name of the first iThink, as many times as I've heard it - just not being able to place it as the song isn't one of the ones I normally put into heavy rotation.

ed: "The Looming Past," the last song on their 1991 album Fear of God.

Maybe tomorrow. But today was definitely not my day.

Still not sleeping enough, so woke up about 30 minutes late. The weather was misty but worth the run as it was cool albeit humid. More of the same, although the average HR was deceptive. My legs are still tired, although after 2.5 miles they were better.

The first two iThinks chained together are a function of moving onto the next song I remember from an album, in this case, Superstar Car Wash, which is my favorite Goo Goo Dolls album.

Today was too inviting a day to not get in the customary long run. The only thing that could've made it better was a little more rain and a little bit cooler temperatures. As a result, I think I was able to get a much more productive run in, although I stopped for water at about the 7.5mi mark, but was back up and running by the 9-mile mark.

What made today's run notable was not the raw splits itself, but rather, the relative efforts. I had rough spots, but no places where I was sucking badly enough where I had to stop. That was significant in itself.

At least I got it in - one thing I usually need to do that I've gotten done. Time to get to other priorities of work.

I need to take a few hours off as I'm totally out of gas. I'll see the wisdom of 11.4 miles of LSD tomorrow to see how I feel.

a small blip

from Juliana Hatfield's blog:

he said: do you think I’m crazy to be going now to drive an hour just to give my girlfriend a kiss goodnight? I told him: no way. I think you’re so sane. I think you are a good boyfriend. Drive carefully.

This says an awful lot about that guy. By inference, it also says a fair amount about something that's been on my mind some lately too.

Today was a challenge inasmuch as I was fighting the Blerch.

So I got at it. There is a lot of snark in Matthew Inman's webcomic, which of course makes it one of my favorites ever, but today was a good example of run or pay later. So I ran. Bumpy start as always, but a creditable finish, so it was a good run (especially given the negative splits at the end). Just not at the start, but they never are.

Today was a recovery run, which was probably the only prudent thing to do. It was more noticeably humid, partly because of the drizzle, but after the last few days, I thought an easy run would be a better idea than sleeping in. Keeping this momentum is a whole lot better than the massive inconsistency of the last few weeks.

The first iThink is perhaps my favorite Juliana Hatfield song ever - and more notably, a song about dysfunctional relationships. The Game Theory song is from a time in my life that I had hitched great hopes of salvaging a relationship that was probably going to come apart, but I had fought (perhaps not in the right way) to try to keep the inevitable from happening. Ironically, it's a song I consider an elegantly hopeful one. But not in its context for me.

I wasn't sure how I'd feel given that I'd spent the better part of 5 hours on my feet at Brickfair Virginia at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. My legs were certainly beat by the time I was done - I can only imagine how trashed out the wife and kids were.

Today was not bad, and the weather certainly helped a lot. It would've been a crime not to go out and get at it this morning, so I did. I felt a lot better, and really stretched it out for speed at the end. Unsurprisingly, I was attempting to burn someone, in the interests of transparency, so I had an ulterior motive.

The first iThink owes to something I was reading about WHFS, a FM station that used to be on 99.1 MHz in the DC-Baltimore Area. Had I grown up in Northern Virginia, it's probably a safe bet I would've listened to it, something I certainly did in the early 90s when WHFS was an amazing station. WHFS also used to play the hell out of that Mission UK song.  Admittedly, as parochial as I thought Richmond was, I was more than happy to go to anywhere more cosmopolitan.  Baltimore/DC was a huge step up in that department.

Today was a very disciplined run. I was looking to run exactly at anaerobic threshold pace, and did so or just below. It meant that I was able to run fairly strong all the way through, and the uphill trail run that usually wipes me out on the way back was uneventful. In that sense it was a good run. It doesn't make up for all the days I didn't run this week, but at least I was able to get my customary long run in this weekend up front.

It almost didn't happen as I woke up at about 12:30am last night with nausea so bad it was coming out both ends. The only good thing was that I was able to drink water without a whole lot of additional handwringing.  That's good, if only because of the length of the run.

I felt really beat, mostly because I've been averaging 4 hours of sleep a night the last few nights. Not because I'm being industrious (with one exception, an article for publication I'm trying to bring to closure) but because my mind is all over the place by 8pm after dinner and the LAST thing I want to do is veg out in front of the TV.

I think my biggest basic difference between me and the OPFOR CDR is the basis in how to recharge. I can't do it in front of the TV because most TV programming pisses me off or insults my intelligence. I think that's about it. The other is that the TV I really want to watch, I don't really want to watch in front of the kids, and the OPFOR CDR probably isn't interested in those shows.

So I got out for a slow recovery run that I'm not sure I felt much more up to than that. This might fit into the category of junk mileage, but in some ways, ANY mileage isn't junk because of how inconsistently I run lately and my constant need to burn lard. Also, I didn't sit my customary half hour in front of the computer reading stuff, so I wasn't particularly woken up either until about 2.5 miles in.

I knew this one was going to hurt but I saw this morning's temperature and thought I'd be able to get one in. Today turned out to be a better run than expected but it was still hard by any standard. What surprised me the most was being able to run most of the way uphill on trails in the last three miles. I knew I was going to be in the hurt box, but wanted to see how much pain I could run through as a function of getting the run in.

Better to try than to sleep in, especially after last week. I truly think this is the one thing weekly that keeps me honest, because I know I can't just do this off no mileage base, in spite of my lack of any substantive effort during the week to maintain it.

I went out thinking it was only 72F degrees, by which time it had actually gone up to 82F. By the time I was done it had gone up to 88F and what I was thinking wasn't going to be so bad turned into a full up death run.

Today was going to be bad, so I packed a Camelbak full up. What I didn't realize was that I was packing 100oz of water, not 70oz. Next time I'm taking out one of my legacy Camelbaks (as in first generation one) that only holds 70oz. The water was a lifesaver but I took too much (I had half of it left by the end).  I walked large chunks of today, as hard as I went.  Of course, if I'd realized it was going to be 88F by the time I finished, maybe I would've practiced some discretion instead.

I hurt. I'm going to continue to hurt for a while today after that run.

I wasn't really intending on going the level of intensity I did today, since I'd driven to North Carolina on Wednesday night and back yesterday afternoon, which in itself is not a big deal, but I deliberately didn't get too crazy when the OPFOR CDR, who is not used to driving in the DC area during high traffic, started really getting assed up.

However, there was one person who was running in front of me this morning and so turned into a pacer. However, that person was faster than me on level ground, so I was working hills more intensively to try to close the gap. Didn't happen before our respective routes diverged, but it made today's run surprisingly productive. And hard. The last mile was spent recovering from the hotdogging I was doing trying to keep up in miles 2, 3, and 4.

It's supposed to be hot today. Crazy hot:

Scattered showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Heat index values as high as 107. Light southwest wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Yay.

Today was a bad start where I had no energy but by the time I had hit about 3 miles I was fully warmed up. It's been a while since I've run my customary 5-mile loop, but I was unprepared for just how much raw willpower it took just to get out the door. Apart from mile 3 (mostly uphill) I ran generally negative splits. There are some uphill portions of the last mile.

The weather has not helped much. While it hasn't been ridiculously hot lately (by DC standards), it's also been accompanied by virtually no wind. That's the killer. Running in the direction of traffic is okay, although facing traffic going 55mph might not be the desired speed. (I was on a path off the road itself.)

I started out on very tired legs from yesterday's cycle ride, as well as some residual soreness from wiping out. But I needed to get in a long run today, and while I wasn't up to going 10 or more, I needed to go more than 7. The comparative absence of wind didn't help much today, though.

I was totally soaked through with sweat by the time I was done. Literally not a dry spot on me by the time I was done.

The heat killed me today. Two factors, in spite of going heavy on water this morning, were socks that didn't breathe at all, and a dark shirt, I suspect. I got through most of the run without walking, short of one brief section of about 50 feet. Today was not fun. I hit the wall around mile 7 and it was a grindout from there.

It's perhaps instructive that the local weather sensor was reading 87.8F by the time I got back. Also, variable 5 = no discernible wind, which added a bit to the difficulty. Occupational hazard.

Today was hot as balls. What was intended as a recovery run after yesterday's cycling turned into a lot of wogging that was still well inside zone 3. Ergh.

However, I found a short trail that went through the woods and the unexpected bonus was a water fountain at the turnaround point. That hit the spot.

I decided to try something I hadn't done in a long while, and pumped up my commuter bicycle tires and went for just under a 15mi ride. I hurt in a nonproductive way today. Today was my moment of truth in the heat, and I was found wanting. However, I have no excuses as I really avoid running in the heat every chance I get - unless it gets in the way of trying to catch back up on sleep, which I did last night.

Today started out optimistically, and turned into a grit festival at the end. Bad enough where I walked about 20m of the last uphill, it was so unpleasant.

I still needed to get at it, so I did. The two longer mile splits include stops to accomodate oncoming traffic where I didn't stop the clock.

The last iThink is curiously appropriate for today. Yesterday marked some unnamed agency at the Pentagon sending out notes on "4th of July is all about diversity." That is such fucking bullshit. How the hell can a day of division from a home country, to include armed insurrection, be about diversity? Seriously?!  For that, I have the last iThink.  Bite my nuts.

Neither strong nor weak today, but yesterday's rest day gave a little impetus for going a bit further today. I wanted to go more than the usual five, but didn't go quite as far as I'd have liked to make it an even six. On the other hand, the temperature and humidity, while not imposing in terms of numbers, made for a sticky run. It really has the feeling of "about to rain" and the lugubrious feeling (whether my own or weather-induced) didn't help.
