I have no idea where the hockey music attack came from this morning, but I woke up earlier than I usually do on a Sunday because it'd been a few days since I went for a run. I was warmed up after about 3 or 4 miles, so it was a usual run; jerky, painful start followed up by full power by about 35 minutes.

I will admit that although I was a Buffalo Sabres fan as a kid, I always had a lot of respect for the Canadiens (for some reason or another) and their old goal music is pretty catchy when you're grinding uphill.

Continuing to lift, but getting stronger. The weather was noticeably cooler and it contributed to the faster splits in and out. It's unusual that I ran negative splits back, but I took a brief break to talk to my cousin who was out doing combatives training. Being 55F degrees is a whole lot more conducive to faster running than it being 70F or 80F.

I do need to run more, though.

I was up early and couldn't sleep. I decided to kick it off with a longer run after an hour and a half of not being able to go to sleep.

First longer run in a while, but I realize that I need to balance some of my lifting as my waist line is starting to expand. This means I'm eating too much (which I'm not sure I want to give up yet) or I need to run more.

So, I'm running more, if I can sustain it.

This was the first day doing the Teardrop of Suck in a long while and suck it did. I'm not that bent out of shape running 10:00/mi uphill if it means I'm burning lard, which was the goal.

I realized it's been 15 years since I graduated from Johns Hopkins, although my recalling the song the JHU pep band played at the end of each game is after watching Cornell lose in overtime to Syracuse in yesterday's NCAA Division I lacrosse final. I was disappointed as I was rooting for the Big Red on this one, since they weren't the Cruisers and I root for the underdog.

After four days of screwing off and doing nothing more than eating, it was time to get back on the stick.

My comments from yesterday are in some part because I still feel some sliver of responsibility for the combat fatalities resulting from the plans I wrote when I was in Afghanistan. Memorial Day's not just a barbeque day, and it's not just a goddamn day off, either. I don't want to call it a holy day of obligation, but I find that my rather punishing view of duty tends to sit, as Vice Admiral James Stockdale once said, "in the desk drawer marked 'too hard.'"

My unforgiving view of those who lack the talent or desire to exercise professional commitment may not ingratiate me to people. I also find, that, after a while, I don't give a damn.

As to be expected, I'm getting bigger...and unfortunately, I'm not losing much in the way of weight. I figured as much. On the other hand, it also means that my relative percentage of body fat is decreasing. That's encouraging, somewhat, although maybe not if I want to run a marathon next January. The run times are not encouraging in themselves today.

Some thoughts on Memorial Day, 2009

If you are able, save for them a place inside of you
and save one backward glance when you are leaving
for the places they can no longer go.

Be not ashamed to say you loved them,
though you may or may not have always.
Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own.

And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.
MAJ Michael Davis O'Donnell, "Remember Them"
written 1 January 1970, Dak To, Vietnam

Only in this picture I see something else; I hear different music. Because I know that at this moment, this orchestra is playing neither a festive march nor a glorifying hymn. It is playing honest music, in memory of those who have been killed.

First day trying to get up early, as I signed in off leave yesterday. Fun. At least I had an appropriate mantra in the back of my mind...

Perhaps I'm not the morning person I thought I was, but I woke up without a whole lot of handwringing. Then I wogged my ass to the gym, thought I was going to row 10,000, scaled back to 8,000, and then realized that I'd be out of time if I went much more than 5,000.

The lifting I've been doing has been paying off. I was holding about 2:07.2/500m or so, a substantial improvement over what I was doing in Afghanistan (where I did zero lifting at all) and a sizeable improvement over my last session on the erg a month prior. Of course, it helps when I've actually been doing PT regularly (or something like that) for the last month.

First off: the iThink is because of digging through old videotapes (preparing to throw them away) and watching parts of Vision Quest. Yes, the film starring Matthew Modine. No shit.

Easy run, quick lift, slower run back. It's not taking as long now - and the decreased rest times are encouraging, since I'm not really looking to increase weight - but I have to be careful of form, since I get sloppy and that can be counterproductive.

The weather was as good as it gets for a long run, so I decided to do what I've previously called the Nine Miles of Suck.

And suck it did. I ran this at purely aerobic pace to burn lard, which I think was counteracted by the small avalanche of chow I ingested upon returning home.

Yes, I need to be more disciplined about what I stuff down my yap.

My knees hurt. Time to pull the Cho-Pat straps back out...since it feels like retropatellar pain syndrome, which is consistent for starting to run regularly after as little as I did when I was in Afghanistan.

Lifting was a little tougher today as I deliberately cut breaks no longer than 45 seconds, with one exception where I was staring at the TV as I saw news of Pakistani military forces going into the Swat Valley. I'll believe it when I see it, since the history of the Pakistani military in Swat is checkered...they can take it, but I don't know whether they can hold it. I guess the Taliban rolling into Buner scared the shit out of them enough where they might start thinking about doing something for real. Maybe.

Running back sucked ass. I noticed that I was sucking going uphill, and my hamstrings were pretty beat after doing the lifting that I did today.

For not running that much, it was a sure bet that I was going to feel like ass when I did run more than three miles.

I had to drop our minivan off at the service station, so I decided to run out and back so that I could get some work from it.

I was fighting wind on the way out on the second leg, but in general, I don't run enough to warrant going very fast for distances over a few. Still, this was a good changeup from what I'd done in the past few weeks.

Today's weather was surprisingly nice - for being May. I normally would expect it to be getting hot, but not today.

In fact, it was chilly enough where I felt compelled to get a jacket this morning, before I started.

The progression continues - I note that I need to improve my form as I've been getting careless (and this can have colossally inopportune results in the case of the military press).

Today was quick but not labored fast running there or back. I felt significantly better returning than I did last week.

Some cautionary words from Orson Scott Card

...in examining what Ender's experience might be like, I have drawn upon much reading, of course, but also from correspondence and conversation with good men and women who have served our country in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other trouble spots where our responsibilities as the only nation with the strength and the will to help beleaguered people against tyranny have been fulfilled. You bear a burden for us all, and I salute you.

I grieve for those who have fallen, or who, surviving with dire injuries or broken hearts, have been deprived of much or most of the future that you once dreamed of. As a citizen of the United States, I bear some of the responsibility for sending you where you have gone, and certainly reap the benefits. Like Ender, I might not have known what was being sacrificed in my name, but I recognize the connection between us.

And for those who you are visibly whole after your service, but who bear inward changes that no one sees, and carry memories that no one shares, I can only hope that I have done an adequate job of representing, in Ender Wiggin, something of what you feel and think and remember.

Today was focused primarily on speed, trying to get it done quickly so I could do some errands. Normally, this workout takes me about an hour and a half. This one took just a little over an hour, but I got those economies of scale from shorter breaks, which might make for a more productive lifting session, at least for what I'm trying to do, which is maintain endurance while building strength.

I also needed to get out the door, period. Two days of not doing PT was necessary, but I don't need to get into that habit.

The run going in was pleasantly quick, the run coming back was painfully slow after doing all that work. I was in the suck going uphill after doing all that lifting. The road to recovery is slow, but it's getting there.

The Cobalt 60 song was somewhat of a blast from the past - but that was from playing Wing Commander Secret Ops for a little while before starting. It's always good to play a game where I get to fly around and blow some people's shit away with reckless abandon. Damn, that's therapeutic, although I'm fully cognizant that not everyone here in the United States shares my basic desire to fucking kill shit on a periodic basis.

A day of lifting. I concentrated a little more on working biceps and shoulders and I was pretty tired after working this. My runs back are typically slower, and today was no exception. I was pretty beat going uphill on the return leg.

I am finding, though, that now that I'm getting used to lifting every few days, that it's something which is surprisingly easier to keep up than I thought. Certainly more than running, but this is a deliberate shift. I do intend to do at least one long run (more than 7) a week, but I'm not sure when that'll happen, maybe Sundays.

I was pleasantly surprised at the times I ran, although I might have been better served had I not looked at the clock. Empirically speaking, although I'm not really getting much more sleep at home than I did in theater (about 6 hours/night), the fact that I'm lifting and in turn, building strength in places where I normally don't, is helping my speed.

I tried to get out the door earlier today as I had a few things I was meaning to do. A short run followed by the usual work (although I wimped out and went only 15 for all beyond the bench presses).

I think it's working, although I've been noticing that I've been gaining weight lately - which I attribute to muscle mass. I think there may be some weight loss later on if I continue to do this, which is pretty time-intensive (for me, at least, as I don't spend that much time in the gym ordinarily).

It is making me fitter, which is kind of important, at least for me. I don't know about anyone else.

Yesterday I didn't do anything, or intended to, until I ended up digging up four bushes outside my house. That required some work. As I told the neighbors (who probably didn't appreciate the humor), "stay in practice, kill something every day." Hacking away with an axe validates that"Kill something every day" ethos, admittedly.

The Paul Simon song recalls my drive out from North Carolina to Kansas back in 2006, and that song was very much part of the background for the move and my first few months here.
