Every time I come down to Qatar for more than a few days, I try to get in a long run, which has to be at least the length of a run of the perimeter back at Bagram. In my case, it's a triple lapper, which my current running partner elected to boot - not the least of which is that his knees start acting up after five miles.
For whatever reason, I had eaten too late and I still had chow in my stomach, which was not so good for the start. I figured my first lap was going to suck regardless, so I decided to go easy and settle in. That was fine, but I thought it disconcerting that I was good for all of 9:00/mi pace when I was fully warmed up, which is unacceptable.
So I decided to stay on for a third lap and I ran negative splits almost the entire way, as things turned out. My stomach was mostly empty and I was fully warmed up.
I realize that I relax in some ways through long distance - and in ways that other activity won't do.
