This is perimeter run 23.

I decided to take one of our troops out for a run of the perimeter. This was partly a wakeup call for him, as he had just failed his physical fitness test. The goal was to get him to run this at 9:00/mi pace. He was unable to hold much in the way of that pace beyond two miles.

There were large chunks of this run that had to be walked. The guy I was running with isn't used to running distance, and he was in the hurt box, bad. I had to remind him that we were hardly moving and part of the challenge of running almost eight miles was that it was a gut check for his basic ambition to lead troops. It's real hard to justify sending a junior soldier down to the line to work with troops if he can't physically lead them. He has the potential. But he has to show the desire...and stop smoking, and eat better, and stop feeling sorry for himself.

This got me the easiest run in a long, long while. It's bad news when someone's killing himself to hold 10 minute pace.
